The same day on the water feels very different on a fast RIB and on a slow sailing catamaran. Before you look at prices, decide what kind of day you want. Here is how the four main types of boat on Goon Boat compare.
RIB
A RIB, or rigid inflatable boat, has a solid hull with inflatable tubes around it. It is light, quick and stable, and it can slip into small coves where bigger boats cannot go. That makes it the favourite for snorkelling and beach hopping. The downside is comfort: there is little shade, and in choppy water the ride gets bumpy and a bit wet. Most RIBs need a licence or a skipper.
Good for: couples, friends and active families who want to see a lot of coastline in one day.
Motor boat
Motor boats range from open day boats to models with a sun deck, a bimini for shade and a small cabin with a toilet. They are comfortable, fast and easy to live on for a day. Fuel is usually paid on top of the daily rate, and the bigger the engine, the more it uses. A licence or a skipper is needed.
Good for: families with children, groups that want shade and a toilet on board, longer trips to the islands.
Sailing boat
A sailing monohull is the quiet option. You move with the wind, so the speed and the route depend on the weather, and the boat heels when it sails. There is room to lie on deck and the cabin gives shade. French law does not ask for a licence to sail, but operators want to see real experience, and many guests simply take a skipper.
Good for: people who want the feeling of sailing and a slower, calmer day.
Catamaran
A catamaran has two hulls, so it stays almost flat when it sails and at anchor. The deck is wide, the nets at the front are the best place on board, and the shallow draft lets you anchor close to the beach. It is the most comfortable choice for a large group, and usually the most expensive. Most are rented with a skipper.
Good for: big groups, celebrations and families who want space and stability.
A quick way to decide
- Coves and snorkelling, small group: RIB.
- Shade, toilet and comfort: motor boat with a cabin.
- A slow day under sail: sailing boat with a skipper.
- Many people and lots of space: catamaran.
Then check three things on the card: how many people the boat takes, whether a skipper is included, and whether fuel is included. The article What the daily rate covers, and what costs extra explains the rest. When you are ready, browse the boats.
